Communication is about connection, and there are many ways to be heard. For people who are non-speaking or minimally verbal, Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) opens up new possibilities for expressing thoughts, needs and personality.
AAC includes a wide range of tools. Some are low-tech, like communication books, picture boards or key word signs. Others are high-tech, such as tablets or dedicated speech-generating devices that speak aloud when a person selects words or symbols.
There is no one-size-fits-all solution. Our speech pathologists work alongside individuals and families to assess communication needs, trial different options, and find what fits best. Once a system is chosen, we provide set-up, programming and training so that communication can happen confidently across home, school and community.
AAC is not a replacement for speech. It is a way to support communication in whatever form works best for each person.
