The Difference between an Accredited Hand Therapist & Physiotherapist
An Accredited Hand Therapist is different from your ordinary physiotherapist in many ways. An Accredited Hand Therapist (per the Australian Hand Therapy Association) is a physiotherapist who, through advanced continuing education, clinical experience and integration of knowledge in anatomy, physiology and kinesiology, has become proficient in the treatment of conditions (traumatic, disease or congenital) affecting the upper limb (shoulder, arm, elbow, wrist and hand). With 27 bones in just the hand alone, along with associated nerves, arteries, veins, muscles, tendons, ligaments and cartilage, the potential for injury and ongoing disability can be high.
A Certified Hand Therapist [USA] must have a minimum of 3 years and 4000 hours of treatment of hand and upper limb disorders, and pass a rigorous certification exam by the HTCC [USA] to demonstrate their competency in the practice of Hand Therapy.
Health On High has the only Certified and Accredited Hand Therapists in Coffs Harbour & the Mid North Coast.
We help you get back to work & live a productive lifestyle
We can evaluate and treat any problem related to the upper extremity, bridging the gap from medical management to a patient’s successful return to work and/or a productive lifestyle. We help you manage the challenging recovery of complex hand and upper limb injuries, maximising outcomes and minimising complications, to provide non-operative interventions, post-surgical rehabilitation and preventative care for a wide variety of upper extremity disorders, from simple fingertip injuries to complex replanted extremities. Our Therapist works closely with Hand Surgeons and the patient to provide a continuum of care.
Benefits for Patients with Arthritis Or Neurologic Conditions
Patients with chronic conditions, such as arthritis, or neurologic conditions, can benefit from hand therapy through education on joint protection and energy conservation, and with recommendations for adaptive equipment or devices to improve function. A Hand Therapist employs a variety of techniques and tools, including activity and exercise programs, custom splint fabrication, management of pain and swelling and wound and scar care. They can also be a consultant in the industrial world, training employees in good ergonomic and healthy work habits.
Our Certified and Accredited Hand Therapists provide:
- Accurate assessments, immediate and effective care to reduce treatment time
- A continuum of care eliminating the need for multiple medical providers
- Faster recovery results by minimising complications
- Functional outcomes ensuring a faster return to work and productive lifestyle
- The most comprehensive care for their patients
