The Difference between an Accredited Hand Therapist & Physiotherapist

An Accredited Hand Therapist is different from your ordinary physiotherapist in many ways. An Accredited Hand Therapist (per the Australian Hand Therapy Association) is a physiotherapist who, through advanced continuing education, clinical experience and integration of knowledge in anatomy, physiology and kinesiology, has become proficient in the treatment of conditions (traumatic, disease or congenital) affecting the upper limb (shoulder, arm, elbow, wrist and hand). With 27 bones in just the hand alone, along with associated nerves, arteries, veins, muscles, tendons, ligaments and cartilage, the potential for injury and ongoing disability can be high.

A Certified Hand Therapist [USA] must have a minimum of 3 years and 4000 hours of treatment of hand and upper limb disorders, and pass a rigorous certification exam by the HTCC [USA] to demonstrate their competency in the practice of Hand Therapy.

Health On High has the only Certified and Accredited Hand Therapists in Coffs Harbour & the Mid North Coast.

Benefits for Patients with Arthritis Or Neurologic Conditions

Patients with chronic conditions, such as arthritis, or neurologic conditions, can benefit from hand therapy through education on joint protection and energy conservation, and with recommendations for adaptive equipment or devices to improve function. A Hand Therapist employs a variety of techniques and tools, including activity and exercise programs, custom splint fabrication, management of pain and swelling and wound and scar care. They can also be a consultant in the industrial world, training employees in good ergonomic and healthy work habits.
