Benefits of Physiotherapy for Pregnancy

Physiotherapy during pregnancy is designed to support the body as it undergoes various physical changes. Key benefits include:

  • Improved Posture & Balance: As the body changes, maintaining balance and good posture becomes important. Physiotherapy helps in adapting to these changes, reducing strain and discomfort.
  • Pain Relief: Targeted exercises and techniques alleviate common pregnancy-related pains such as backache and pelvic discomfort.
  • Preparation for Childbirth: Strengthening the pelvic floor and learning relaxation techniques may lead to a smoother labour and delivery experience.
  • Postnatal Recovery: Physiotherapy sets the foundation for postnatal recovery to help new mothers regain strength and fitness and treat any obstetric trauma that can occur during childbirth.

What Can I Expect During My First Pregnancy Physiotherapy Session?

During your initial pregnancy physiotherapy session, you'll undergo a comprehensive assessment to understand your specific needs and health status. Our women’s health physiotherapist Danielle, will discuss your medical history, current symptoms and any concerns you have about pregnancy-related changes in your body. This session typically includes a gentle examination to evaluate your posture, flexibility and pelvic alignment. Based on this assessment, Danielle will create a personalised treatment plan, which may include exercises, pain relief strategies and advice on managing daily activities and how to exercise safely during pregnancy.

How Often Should I Attend Pregnancy Physiotherapy Sessions?

The frequency of your pregnancy physiotherapy sessions will depend on your individual needs and the stage of your pregnancy. Danielle will recommend a frequency of face-to-face sessions that supports your health and well-being, taking into account your goals, and any specific issues or challenges you're experiencing.

Mums and Bubs Classes

This is a small and specific class for post-natal women, focused on strengthening and re-training lumbo-pelvic activation and coordination while also maintaining flexibility and mobility. Our classes use a mixture of pilates and yoga style exercises that are tailored to the post-natal body. This class is run by our Women’s health physiotherapist that will tailor and adapt exercises to your specific needs and take into consideration post-natal conditions such as abdominal wall separations and pelvic floor issues.
